EDHEC Speaker Series: Greenwashing Index

Three years ago, EDHEC Business School launched the monthly online speaker series, 'The Future of Finance,' designed to explore the latest developments in the financial industry and discuss how finance can address critical economic and societal challenges.

How does the salience of greenwashing in the media influence investors' trading of green assets?

On April 1st, 2025, EDHEC Business School will host Elise Gourier, Professor of Finance at ESSEC Business School, who will deliver a talk on Greenwashing Index.

She will describe how allusions to greenwashing can be identified in the news, using state-of-the art Natural Language Processing techniques. Elise and her coauthor Hélène Mathurin (ESSEC) build a greenwashing salience index, and show that this index has recently been driven by skepticism towards the financial sector, specifically ESG funds, ESG ratings and green bonds.

Key discussion points:

  • Identifying greenwashing signals in financial news
  • The link between greenwashing salience, ESG backlash, and green fund flows
  • Insights from the Greenwashing Salience Index

The session will be moderated by Gianfranco Gianfrate, Professor of Finance at EDHEC Business School and Emmanuel Jurczenko, Executive Director of Graduate Finance Programmes at EDHEC Business School
